Rosa Parks = vet
This weekend I went to a party in Rotterdam with David, Tammo and Martijn. (If I haven’t mentioned them before, Tammo and Martijn are awesome.) The party was held in someone’s home (I think), but it wasn’t your typical house party. There were several “main events” planned in the living room ranging from an acoustic singer/songwriter combination, a poetry reading, a short movie screening, a noise rock duo named “Rosa Parks” and a band that played Leonard Cohen covers. Between each event everyone just mingled in the hallways or chatted at the bar, and then shuffled back into the living room when someone announced “Dames and heren…..” (ladies and gentlemen).
It. was. so. good.
The party pretty much had the same kind of vibe that you would find in the States (hipsters), except everyone spoke Dutch. Usually the hipster scene is a little intimidating, but I’ve found it’s less so when you’re in another country. Anyway, the movie was about slavey on Curaco and very high quality (directed by a guy who is in school with Tammo). There was a Q&A with him afterwards (curiously, he was wearing a Boston Red Sox hat. I see a lot of Yankee hats here as well). They also handed out free popcorn during the viewing (generous hipsters). Of course, I didn’t understand much of the poetry reading, but since Leonard Cohen is Canadian, listening to the cover band wasn’t a problem. Added bonus — they were excellent. Check it:
I really enjoyed Rosa Parks as well (there is no such thing as a language barrier with noise rock).
The group that organized it is called Singer Sweatshop. You can check them out here. The site’s in English.
Oh, and last week was my final exam week. I start new classes tomorrow (Microeconomics and Institutions and Introduction to Business). Round two, b*tches.
